Stages Of Esophageal Erosion

Esophageal erosion means the gradual deterioration of the esophagus (food tube), the tube that receives food from the mouth and hands it to the stomach. Altho

ugh it seems simple enough it is not so. It is not the food, swallowed, just falls from the esophagus into the stomach. When food reaches the esophagus from the mouth of a series of muscle movements gra

dually takes the food down into the stomach. There no fast movement. This is why it is always recommended to eat slowly, chew and swallow it properly without haste.

Why and how the supply pipe to deteriorate?

In most cases, the wear of the esophagus is caused due to digestive problems. The most common digestive problem is gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). In this condition the stomach contents back into the esophagus because the flap that secures the opening between the supply pipe and stomach, malfunctions and does not close properly. This constant backup of stomach acid into the esophagus causes damage to the food pipe leading to stabilize the erosion of the esophageal mucosa. This erosion gives rise to a multitude of problems.

Stomach Acid:

Stomach acid is primarily responsible for the digestion of food. To protect the stomach itself of this acid, nature provides a special stomach coating every 4-5 days. This gives us an idea of how strong stomach acid actually is. Now, when this acid rises into the esophagus which does not have this luxury of a special lining, one can imagine the damage it will cause in the supply pipe. This rarely happens but when it occurs, the body will start to deteriorate and this makes the affected person lose weight.

Causes of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD):

Dysfunction of the lower esophageal sphincter muscles of the opening of the esophagus into the stomach is guarded by a set of muscles that act as a cover. Its main function is to prevent foods from going back to the supply pipe from the stomach. When this flap weakens the food content of the stomach gets a free pass back into the esophagus, causing serious problems.

Other causes are:

1.        Irregular function of the stomach

2.        Abnormalities of the esophagus

3.        Hiatal hernias

4.        Genetic problems

5.        Diabetes

6.        Gastrointestinal

7.        Lymphoma

Stages of esophageal erosion

1.        Inflammation:

In the initial stages when the stomach acid starts entering the supply pipe, the result is the swelling of the stomach. This lining of the alimentary becomes red and bruises causing a burning sensation in the entire length of the esophagus or parts. This condition is called acid indigestion or heartburn.

2.        Stenosis:

The swelling of the stomach can lead to the wall of the alimentary canal is swollen. This swelling crosses the passage of the food pipe making swallowing food and saliva even difficult. This swelling can occur at any area along the esophagus.

3.        Ulcers:

In addition, the constant presence of stomach acid into the supply pipe is path ulcers. They usually occur at the base of the food pipe which always takes the first hit and worst affected is.

4.        Bleeding:

The next step is bleeding from the wounds of the esophagus. When blood is noticed in the stool or vomit of the person affected, then it is a dangerous sign.

5.        Tooth Decay:

Other parts of the mouth and teeth get affected as the progress of the erosion of the esophagus.
